Goji Berries: I was introduced to these red little berries when I worked with Dragon Herbs, a Chinese Tonic Herb and Superfood store in Santa Monica, CA. I know these berries as Lycium fruit, which is their Chinese name, and they are one of my favorite superfoods! Lycium has been used in China and Tibet for thousands of years as a medicinal and culinary ingredient.
Benefits: Goji Berries are rich in nutrients and help with mental wellbeing, athletic performance, quality of sleep, and helping the eyes stay healthy.
– Goji Berries are high in essential amino acids as well as the highest concentration of protein out of any fruit.
– This amazing little superfruit also contains natural anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal compounds. Their powerful antioxidant properties and polysaccharides help to boost the immune system.
– They are also loaded with vitamin C, contain more carotenoids than any other food, have twenty-one trace minerals, and are high in fiber.
Caution: can be adverse interactions if you consume Goji Berries while also taking medication for diabetes, or blood pressure, or take the blood thinner warfarin.
How I eat Goji Berries:
I soak overnight in a cup of water, or boil a small palm-full in water in to make a tea, and use the wet berries in my yogurt or granola cereal. Boiling Goji Berries releases the actual seed in the berry which I feel is the real medicine!
You can also add dry Goji Berries to your favorite trail mix.
